Irishman Shot Dead In Spain

A 41-year-old Irishman was shot dead in the Costa del Sol in Spain early this morning, according to a Spanish newspaper. The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was aware of the reports and was seeking confirmation of the death. According to the paper El Mundo, the man was shot in Benalmádena in Málaga at about 2am Irish time following a row with another man in a bar. It is believed that one of the men returned to the scene armed with a firearm and shot the other man dead. Neighbours rang the emergency services to report the incident and the man was confirmed dead by police a short time after.

Union To Discuss Waste Dispute

Four Siptu shop stewards from each of the Dublin local authorities are to meet today to discuss an ongoing dispute over the outsourcing of waste disposal services. The meeting will also hear a report on talks at the Labour Relations Commission to resolve the dispute in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. The dispute arose after the council decided to outsource bin collection services to Panda, a private firm. Workers in South Dublin, Fingal and Dublin City Council have already voted to take industrial action in support their colleagues in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown if the current talks fail. Siptu called off strike action planned for last week and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown council agreed to defer signing contracts with Panda as talks proceeded.

Also on the list is English born but Cork based author David Mitchel with his virtuosic tale of feudal Japan. The announcement comes only a day within Dublin being announced as a Unesco City of Literature.

Anglo To Take Control Of Arnotts

The Arnotts department store in Dublin is set to come under the control of Anglo Irish Bank. The move comes as the retailer struggles with significant debts in excess of €250m. The debt is owed to Anglo and also to Ulster Bank. Anglo Irish Bank has sought permission from the European Union to precipitate the move under EU rules. A deadline of 9 August for objections to the move has been set.
