Police Make Arrests After Gun Incident

Detectives from Trident are investigating after two men were arrested after allegedly aiming a firearm at police officers and two member of the public.

It is said to have happened at around 3pm on Tuesday when plain clothes officers on routine patrol stopped a grey Vauxhall Astra outside West Hampstead tube station, West End Lane.

According to the police report, there were two men in the car and firearms were produced and aimed at the three officers

However, the police constables managed to detain one of the suspects near to the station.

A further suspect made off on foot across the railway line and into Sheriff Road where he then attempted to steal a moped from two male members of the public at gunpoint, but a scuffle took place where members of the public attempted to detain the suspect - who then ran from the scene.

That suspect was then arrested by armed officers a short distance away in the Hemstall Road area.

The police said that a number of firearms were also recovered.

Detective Inspector Mick Millar, Trident, said: "This was a serious incident in which officers and a member of the public were threatened with firearms in broad daylight in a very busy area of north London.

"This incident could easily have resulted in somebody being shot and seriously injured if not killed.

"We would therefore like anyone who may have witnessed this incident particularly a female resident who approached uniformed officers and may have information which will be able to assist the investigation."

Commenting, the Brent Borough Commander, Chief Supt Mark Toland said: "It is incidents such as this which shows the professionalism of Brent officers.

"I would also like to pay tribute to members of the public who continually called police to inform them of where the suspects were during the chase and to those brave individuals who attempted to detain the suspects."

The police have a 30-year-old man and a 47-year-old man in custody at a north London police station in respect of the investigation.
