Papal Reform For CoE Defection

A constitutional change by the papal authority could allow thousands of Anglicans to enter into full Catholic communion whilst retaining spiritual differences.

The move is seen as a path for Church of England traditionalists to vent anger at the perceived growing secularist nature of the religious institution.

Some Anglicans remain aghast at the installation of female and openly gay clergy.

However, the Archbishop of Canterbury said Pope Benedict's decision would not hinder relations between the two churches.

Dr Rowan Williams said: "It is not a secret that in this country the ordination of women as bishops is one of those test issues."

He said the church was aware of groups such as the Traditional Anglican Communion who left the Anglican domination some years ago.

However, Dr Williams said it would be a "serious mistake" to view the most recent development as a response to problems within the Anglican Communion.

"I suppose, rather more than 150 years, more or less significant numbers of Anglicans have entered into visible Communion with the Roman Catholic Church.

"I do not see this as, in that sense, anything new."
