Scottish Builders Calls For Vat Cut
A body representing Scottish builders has called on the government to slash the VAT on homes building projects by 5%.
The Scottish Building Federation said a reduction in the 15% tax would help eliminate the competitive advantage industry "cowboys" are enjoying.
Some tradesmen have found it easier to undercut more established firm during the recession.
A 5% cut in overheads would help builders invest in works, the Federation said.
Chief Executive Michael Levack claimed government agencies have treated the construction sector as a "poor cousin" in contrast to other ailing industries.
"The construction industry's huge contribution to skills and employment in this country deserves proper recognition and support," he said.
"As the recession continues to bite hard, construction's recovery literally needs to start at home - and cutting VAT on home building works to 5% would be the ideal place to start."
The Federation's calls come on the back of research which pointed to a potential £80m boost in home improvements if building VAT was lowered.

Darling Tight Lipped Over Stamp Duty Changes

More Than 350 Councils To Receive New Homes Bonus Payments
Housing Minister, Brandon Lewis, has published the final allocations of New Homes Bonus Payments to over 350 councils in England. The total awarded to councils since the scheme's introduction is£3.4 billion, for delivering more than 700,000 new homes and conversions, and bringing over 100,000 empty homes back into use.

A business support organisation is warning firms that the January VAT rise could leave them with a new year headache if they fail to prepare properly. All VAT registered traders will be affected by the increase, which will see VAT rise from its current 17.5% rate to 20% at midnight on January 4.
