Caravan Fire Death Tragedy

The body of an elderly man has been found in a burnt-out caravan in North Yorkshire. Fire crews who discovered the body inside the severely damaged caravan in Appleton Wiske near Northallerton on Sunday morning. Police said due to the nature of the man's injuries it had not yet been possible to identify him. A spokesman said it was not yet known whether the fire was suspicious and inquiries are under way.

Boozy Mum 'Neglected' Baby

A young mother has admitted neglecting her six-week-old baby. Rebecca Ireland, 24, from Preston, Lancashire, found her daughter Katie dead after she brought her into bed last April when she was drunk. She was charged with wilfully neglecting her daughter and initially denied the offence. She changed her plea to guilty yesterday at Preston Crown Court on the basis her actions did not necessarily cause the baby's death. The judge added: "Wilful neglect of a child must always be regarded as serious and the court reserves all sentencing options. One of these is a custodial sentence." Ireland will be sentenced at Preston crown court on 4 December.

University Challenge

The Labour party's overhaul of universities aims to see them become more socially inclusive and students better equipped for business with students who miss the top grades not automatically excluded from prestigious universities. New plans set out by Lord Mandelson are for a major modernisation of England's degree system.

Waitrose Builds In Scotland

A joint planning application to create Scotland's first purpose built Waitrose store has been lodged with East Renfrewshire Council by Gleniffer Estates and Waitrose, the food shops of the John Lewis Partnership. Located off Crookfur Road in Newton Mearns, the store represents the second phase of the new Greenlaw Neighbourhood Centre, created jointly by Gleniffer Estates plc and Walker Group.

The proposal would create Scotland's largest Waitrose shop to date spanning 36,000 sq ft with a sales area of 25,000 sq ft and offering 180 car parking spaces. It represents a multi-million pound investment and it is anticipated that the new store will create up to 200 jobs.

Bumper John Lewis Sales
UK retailer John Lewis has reported its most successful festive sales figures. The department store chain made £500.8m in revenue during the five weeks proceeding 2 January. This represented a 12.7% growth in like-for-like sales performance on last Christmas. John Lewis attributed its success to "excellent" Christmas and clearance trading.

Man Charged Over Jewellery Theft
A 35-year-old man has been charged following a theft at a jewellery shop in Aberdeen last month. It is understood the around £20,000 was taken from the Northern Diamond store on Union Street. The incident happened on 5 August. In a statement, Police Scotland said a man had since been charged in connection with the theft.
