Remands Follow Halloween Hat Murder

Two 20-year-old men have appeared in court today charged with the murder of a man killed in a row over the theft of his girlfriend's Halloween hat.

Ben Gardner, 30, was attacked in the early hours of Sunday morning in Sutton, south London.

He was on a night out with his girlfriend Allanna Devine, 28, when he confronted a thief who stole her hat. Mr Gardner suffered fatal head injuries in the attack.

Daniel Ransom and Ross Collender, both unemployed and from Carshalton, appeared before magistrates in Sutton today, where they were remanded in custody to appear before the Old Bailey on February 10 next year.

Another man, also aged 20 - who was arrested earlier yesterday - has been bailed to return in December, while two other men, aged 21 and 25, have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Man On Trial For Murder Of Ex-Girlfriend And Unborn Child
The trial has opened of a man accused of a fatal "brutal and sustained" attack on his pregnant ex-girlfriend. 20-year-old Eystna Blunnie was found with fatal head injuries near her home in Howard Way, Harlow, Essex, on 27 June last year. A jury heard that Ms Blunnie had been in an abusive relationship with 24-year-old Tony McLernon.

Double Murder Suspect Arrested
Following the arrest on Sunday morning of double murder suspect James Allen police have appealed for people to check on any friends and relatives who could have come into contact him. Detectives made the appeal after 36-year-old Allen was arrested early on Sunday after being spotted by an off-duty officer on his way to work in Leeds.

PSNI Arrest Two Over Croydon Cops Shooting
Northern Ireland's Police Service (PSNI) have arrested two men following the shooting of a police officer in south Croydon earlier this month. On Wednesday evening the men, aged 20 and 26, were arrested at a house in south Belfast and a number of items were removed from the Lisburn Road house for examination.

Halloween Trio Guilty Of Ben Gardner Murder
Three men have been found guilty at the Old Bailey for the murder of a man on Halloween night in 2009. Following a dispute over a fancy dress Halloween hat in the early hours of 1 November 2009, Ben Gardner, 30, was punched and kicked in the head, causing such severe injuries that he never regained consciousness.

Man In Court Charged With Murder Of Sasha Marsden
A 22-year-old man has been remanded in custody accused of the murder of a student whose body was discovered in an alleyway. Sasha Marsden, 16, was fatally stabbed in the head and the face. Attempts to set her on fire were also made. David Minto, appeared before magistrates in Blackpool, and spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.
