Essex Drivers Strike
Bus drivers in Essex have walked out for a third 24-hour strike over pay. Unite union workers at First depots in Essex have taken industrial action after rejecting a three-year pay deal following talks with the company. First proposed a pay deal offering no increase for this year, a 2.5% increase in 2010, and a third year rise based on the retail price index at the time. Some buses were operating as normal but First Essex said passengers should make alternative travel arrangements.
Jobs Saved In Scotland
A car parts company which went into administration in September has been bought by members of its former management team. Administrators from KPMG said 109 jobs would be saved following the sale of John McGavigan in East Dunbartonshire. New owners David Taylor and Steve Mathers said they had been "determined" to save the business. McGavigan, which makes dashboards and other interior car products, had been hit by the decline of the car industry. It has a turnover of about £9m a year.
Skills Scheme Milestone
Skill levels and competency standards across the construction industry continue to improve, with one and a half million workers now holding a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card, it has been announced. The milestone was officially passed when Dunne Christie, a Contracts Manager with Chap Construction, having recently successfully completed an NVQ (level 5) and passed the ConstructionSkills Health and Safety test, was presented with the card by CSCS Chief Executive Brian Adams at a special presentation in Aberdeen. CSCS, the industry's competence card scheme, was introduced 14 years ago to improve skill levels and competency of the UK's workforce, reducing accidents, ill health and fatalities and improving productivity as a result.
