Miliband 'Never A Candidate' For Top EU Job
Foreign Secretary David Miliband was "never a candidate" to become Europe's most influential international envoy, Gordon Brown said today.
The Prime Minister ended continued speculation over Mr Miliband's EU ambitions, despite the man himself earlier denying he had his sights set on the high representative job.
Speaking at his monthly press conference, Mr Brown said: "David Miliband was never a candidate for the high representative job."
He said Britain was only fielding one candidate for a new European council role.
"That candidate is Tony Blair and his candidature is for the presidency of the council. These matters will be sorted out in the next few days."
Several new roles have been created under the Lisbon Treaty, which will come into force when ratified by all 27 EU member states.
According to the BBC, Mr Miliband told the European socialists' group he was "not available" for the job, with sources close to the foreign secretary insisting he sees his future in British politics.
New speculations now surrounds Mr Miliband's aspirations within the Labour party.
Having been in the high-profile Cabinet post since 2007, many view him as the natural successor to Mr Brown.
Mr Miliband is said to be popular among European politicians. Mr Blair, however, is seen as a decisive figure. Commentators have suggested it would be unlikely the UK would offer-up, or be allowed to, occupy two offices within the revised European council.

Blair to remain “firm” EU rebate
Prime Minister Tony Blair has said that he will be “diplomatic but firm” with European leaders over the issue of the UK’s European Union rebate. The Prime Minister, who was in Moscow for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, was speaking ahead of the forthcoming European summit, which takes place in Brussels on June 16 and 17.
