Bury 'Bookie Bandit' Behind Bars

A man has been jailed for almost three years after robbing a bookmakers in Bury.

Daniel Weatherilt, 19, of Tintern Avenue, Whitefield, was convicted of one count of robbery following a trial at Manchester Crown Court Crown Square.

He was sentenced to 33 months in prison earlier this week.

At around 8.30am on Saturday 23 August 2008, a staff member was in the process of opening the Coral betting shop on Parr Lane, Unsworth.

Weatherilt was known to the staff member to be a regular customer so was allowed entry to play on the gaming machines.

A second man who was with Weatherilt was also allowed inside.

Once inside the unknown offender approached the till and demanded cash, telling the staff member he had a knife.

Weatherilt left the store and waited for his accomplice, who stole several hundred pounds. Both men then walked off.

Police were called and Weatherilt was arrested by a responding officer a short time later.

Detective Constable Craig Wallace, of Bury CID, said: "Weatherilt may not have physically threatened the member of staff but is just as culpable as his accomplice.

"Both men were seen loitering before hand and I believe they went into the betting shop with the sole intention of robbing it.

"Weatherilt was a regular and used this to his advantage to get both men inside the store at a time when there would be no one else around, again demonstrating the level of premeditation."
