RNLI Willed £1m

A Scots widower who was once rescued by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has left £1m to the charity. Hugh Brown, 78, originally from Pittenweem in Fife, passed away in February this year. He and his wife, Molly, 76, had lived most of the lives abroad but retired to Kinghorn in Fife in 1985. The RNLI has allocated most of the legacy to projects across Scotland, including maintenance and crew training for the Islay lifeboat. Mr Brown, a retired banker, left his entire estate to the charity.

Cyprus Sentences For UK?

Two Essex cousins who are due to be jailed in Cyprus for manslaughter has requested that they serve their time in a UK prison. Michael Binnington, 23, and Luke Atkinson, 24, from Witham, were passengers in a car which hit and killed a teenager on Cyprus in 2006. Their appeal to the Supreme Court against extradition failed on Tuesday. A request to Justice Secretary Jack Straw for the men to remain in the UK is to be made before they are sent to Cyprus to face three-year jail terms. The car was being driven by Atkinson's uncle, Julian Harrington, in Protaras, when it hit a moped, killing 17-year-old pillion passenger Christos Papiris. Atkinson and Binnington were sentenced in their absence by the Supreme Court of Cyprus in 2008.

Welsh Schools Joined

A £550,000 extension has been officially opened to one of Ceredigion's largest primary schools. Rhydypennau Community School in Bow Street, near Aberystwyth, had been on two separate sites since 1973, but the work has united it in one building. The scheme includes a new classroom for nursery children aged between three and five, a new school entrance, a medical room and facilities for staff.
