Flare Attack Boy 'Critical'
A four-year-old boy has been left critically injured after being hit by a distress flare while walking with his family.
Police described it as an "horrific incident" in which the rocket flare appeared to have been set off horizontally rather than vertically.
The boy was out with his mother, father and baby sister in Romford, Essex.
He was taken to Queen's Hospital and later transferred to a hospital in central London, where his condition was described as critical but stable.
Police were called by ambulance staff who initially believed the boy had been struck by a firework.
But forensic officers found the remains of a hand-held parachute-assisted rocket flare close to where the incident happened in Chatteris Avenue, Harold Hill, on Saturday afternoon.
Detectives want to trace a young boy who was asking about the injured boy's condition at the scene before police arrived and a woman driver who offered to take the child to hospital.
Detective Inspector David Cavanagh said: "If you are one of these people, or you know who they may be, please call us.
"We are also keen to hear from anyone who was in or around the area around at the time of the incident who may have seen or heard anything they thought might be suspicious."

Baby Dies After Being Bitten By Family Pet
A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a baby bitten by dog in Sunderland. The three-week-old baby boy died in hospital following an incident at his home in Falkland Road. Police were called to the address at 04:15 on Saturday, 20 June. It is understood that the baby had been bitten by the families pet dog.

Boy Dies After Falling Into River In Argyll
A 10-year-old boy has died after falling into a river in Argyll while on holiday with his family. Emergency services were called to the incident at 13:45 on Tuesday. The boy was rescued by a passer-by after getting into difficulties. He was airlifted to Glasgow for treatment, however he later died at Yorkhill Hospital.

Toddler In Pond Tragedy
An investigation has been launched after a three-year-old boy died when he fell into a garden pond. Ethan Read, from Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, died in spite of his mother's attempts to revive him before the ambulance arrived. The incident happened at an address in Coney Weston. The death is being treated as unexplained.
