Crack Down On Cumbria Christmas Thieves

Thieves in the Cumbrian areas of Gosforth and Great Park have been warned there is no hiding place as police continue their Christmas crackdown.

Extra teams of uniform and undercover officers are flooding key retail areas to combat the traditional rise in theft in the run up to Christmas.

Police said they will be paying attention to the popular shopping areas of Kingston Park and Gosforth High Street to prevent shoplifting and pickpocketing.

Officers are working together with the force's Metro Unit and Nexus to stop travelling thieves on the Metro, with known thieves being stopped and searched and sent back on their way if thought to be committing crime.

"Anyone arrested for theft will, where possible, be given bail conditions banning them from coming back into the area they were arrested," said a police spokesman.

Crime prevention advice will also be issued to shoppers to raise awareness of purse dipping in Newcastle, and how they can keep their property safe.
