Multiple Robber Jailed

A criminal who evaded police after committing a series of armed robberies has been jailed for nine years.

Grant Findlay, aged 23, of Marvels Lane, Bromley, was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court on Tuesday November 17, after pleading guilty to conspiracy to rob between April 1 and May 17 2008 and possession of an imitation firearm with intent.

Findlay had carried out a string of armed robberies, mainly in Dorset and Surrey, with the help of fellow robber Tony Turner.

Turner, now 29 years of age, of no fixed address, sparked a police manhunt when he escaped from a prison van while on his way to Barking Magistrates' Court for conspiracy to rob offences on April 2, 2008.

He disappeared and spent the time until he was traced by police carrying out further armed robberies on cash in transit vehicles.

Turner was again arrested last May, but Findlay remained at large.

Soon afterwards, Findlay was stopped by officers in Bromley he was in a car as they thought they recognised him.

He gave false details but officers uncovered his identity and he was subsequently charged with the robbery offences.

Detective Inspector Ian Corner, from the Flying Squad at Barking, said: "Despite our best efforts Findlay remained at large and wanted for these crimes even after his counterparts had been jailed for their part.

"Good work by Bromley police led to his identification when he was stopped and I'm extremely pleased he has now been brought to justice.

"I would also like to pay tribute to the hard work of Flying Squad investigating officer Detective Sergeant Andy McGuire - this was a detailed protracted enquiry and he worked tirelessly to catch and convict all those involved."
