Probe Follows Deadly Birmingham Blaze

Specialist fire investigators are continuing to make enquiries following house fire in Perry Barr, Birmingham which claimed the lives of two people yesterday.

The fire investigation team were able to enter the house, on Wensleydale Road, yesterday afternoon after the premises was made safe by West Midlands Fire Service.

Emergency services were called to the semi-detached house just after 4:30am on Thursday after a member of the public spotted the blaze.

Two people, a man and a woman believed to be in their 60s, were confirmed dead at the scene. Formal identification of the deceased is set to take place later today.

Police said post mortem examinations will take place in due course to determine the cause of death.

The property was severely damaged and houses either side were evacuated while the Fire Service dealt with the blaze.

Heroic Tyne Firemen Honoured
Two Tyne and Wear firefighters are to be recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony today. Andrew Nelson and Allan Richardson will be presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendations for brave and meritorious conduct after saving a man's life. The men took part in a dramatic rescue in the early hours of 4 February.

Flash Floods Clean-Up In Somerset
A massive clear-up operation is underway after flash flooding hit large parts of Somerset. Torrential storms on Thursday lead to severe flooding which meant many families had to be evacuated. Motorists were warned to stay off the roads as many became out of bounds.

Suspicious Glasgow Car Fires
Detectives in Glasgow's East End are investigating a spate of vehicle fire attacks in the city yesterday. Shortly after 3.30am police were called to a report of a vehicle fire in Ashvale Crescent, Glasgow. Upon arrival police were advised by Strathclyde Fire Service that four vehicles had been damaged by fire.

Chief Fire Officer Resigns Over Child Porn Arrest
A top fire officer for the West Midlands Fire Service has resigned after he was arrested on suspicion of making indecent images of children. West Midlands Police arrested Frank Sheehan, 55, yesterday at his home in Sutton Coldfield.
