Barry George Wins Media Pay-Out

The man cleared of murdering BBC presenter Jill Dando has received compensation from newspapers who wrongly reported he had stalked other women.

Barry George accepted "substantial damages" from News Group Newspapers, which owns the Sun and Sunday tabloid the News of the World.

Mr George (pictured here) said he was "pleased" with the outcome with his conviction for killing Ms Dando having been quashed in August 2008.

The popular journalist was gunned-down at the front door of her London in 1999.

No one has ever been brought to justice for the brutal murder.

Mr George's legal team took action against the newspapers over false claims made in the wake of his release.

Speaking today, he said: "I am pleased that the matter between myself and News Group Newspapers has been amicably settled following a successful mediation without the need for litigation."

News Group withdrew its allegations printed in the Sun and News of the World, and apologised to Mr George.

It also agreed to pay damages, reportedly around £100,000, and cover his legal costs.
