Body Found By Reading River

The body of a teenage woman has been found close to the Kennet River in Reading.

Police said the remains of the 19-year-old were discovered on the footpath a short distance from the A33, near the Green Park industrial estate in the Berkshire town last night.

It is believed the woman worked locally in a shop, and had the contents of her handbag shrewn across the path.

Post-mortem tests are due to be carried out later.

Detective have yet to establish a motive for the murder, but believe it may have developed from a mugging.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said the victim was from Reading, and had been found by a passer-by, who phoned 999 at about 9.15pm on Monday.

The scene remained closed this morning and specialist teams investigated the area.

Detective Superintendent Karen Trego, leading the investigation, said: "We have a team of detectives working on this case and are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident or who has any information about it."
