Youths Rescued From River
Two 'lucky' youths have been rescued from a Lancaster river after heavy fog hampered efforts by emergency services.
The boys went into the water near Skerton Bridge, which fords the river near Ryelands Park.
The alarm was raised by Lancaster Police who were pursuing the youths. At just before 9pm on Friday officers saw one of the individuals go into the water.
Morecambe RNLI inshore lifeboat and hovercraft launched from Snatchems further down the river. The fog at the time meant visibility was only around 20 to 50 foot.
Communications due to low water and the area also hampered the search.
At around 9.20pm one of the youths was seen clinging to the bridge and the other was still missing.
The youth hanging on to the line beneath the bridge was recovered safely.
By 10pm the second boy had been recovered and taken to an ambulance covered in mud.
He had jumped from the bridge and managed to get across the river somehow to the other side of Skerton Bridge.
He had then negotiated the mud by clinging on to the wall until he could get a grip of something secure to hold.
Ged Lynch, Duty Watch Manager at Liverpool Coastguard said: "With the very thick fog in the area and the way it deadens sound these two characters are very lucky to come out of this experience alive tonight.
"Hypothermia can kill and kill very quickly. If the search had gone on into the night, we would have been unable to use a helicopter, as the fog was too dense to see through - even using infra red glasses - and the lack of visibility would have also been a threat to the pilot and crew."

Welsh Police Recover Body From Tawe
A body has been recovered by police searching for a man who was last seen jumping from a bridge into a river. He was observed going into the River Tawe at Quay Parade in Swansea. The body has been taken to the city's Singleton Hospital for formal identification but police say they are not treating the death as suspicious.

Megan Roberts Body Found In River
The body of 20-year-old student, Megan Roberts, has been found in a river. The body was found in the River Ouse after a pedestrian reported a sighting on Sunday afternoon in the Ouse, near a pub in Acaster Malbis, five miles south of York where she was studying.

Body Found In River Identified As Megan Roberts
A woman's body found in the River Ouse, near York, has been confirmed as that of missing student Megan Roberts. North Yorkshire Police said a member of the public spotted the body at 3.30pm on Sunday, at Acaster Malbis, a village around five miles south of York.

Mersey Gateway Bridge Gets Green Light
£470 million of funding for a new bridge across the River Mersey has been approved by Transport Secretary Philip Hammond. The new dual three-lane bridge, between Runcorn and Widnes, will form a major new transport route improving links between the Liverpool City region, north Cheshire and the wider North West to the rest of the country.

New Thames Bridge To Be Built
Plans for a £32.3 million bridge across the Thames, the first major new road crossing over the river in about 20 years, have been approved by the Government. Local Transport Minister Norman Baker confirmed funding is available for Surrey County Council's new crossing between Walton and Shepperton.
