Football Ban For Rome Attacker

A man has been banned from football after he assaulted another man during last year's Champion's League final in Rome.

Ian Potts, 41, of Sanderson Close, Worsley, was convicted after pleading guilty to assault at Manchester Magistrates Court.

Potts received a four-year football banning order on Monday 15 February 2010.

The conviction relates to an incident involving Potts and a 46-year-old victim on Wednesday 27 May 2009.

The 46-year-old had earlier intervened during an altercation between Potts and a woman outside the stadium, an hour before kick-off.

Potts threatened the man and they went their separate ways.

Before the match started, Potts saw the victim again inside the stadium and without provocation, violently attacked him.

As a result of the attack, the victim received a serious injury to his ear.

Detective Constable Alex Robinson from the Force Football Intelligence Unit said: "The victim had done absolutely nothing to warrant such a vicious attack and has been left permanently scarred by the assault.

"As any decent person would, he simply came to the aid of a woman who was being picked upon by this man outside the stadium but thought that was the end of the matter.

"Potts is clearly not a real supporter and football crowds will be that little bit better without him in them."
