Mum Charged With 'Acid' Murder

A 24-year-old woman has appeared in court charged with murdering a child aged 3.

Iman Omar Yousef is believed to be the mother of the little girl.

Ms Yousef spoke only to confirm her name, address and date of birth at Sutton Coldfield Magistrates' Court this morning.

Police are still investigating the circumstances of the murder, and the use of a harmful substance, reported to be acid.

Alia Ahmed Jama's remains where found at an address on Milverton Road, Erdington, on Saturday evening.

Her body is expected to formally identified by family members later.

Ms Yousef, who was charged last night, has been remanded in custody to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday.

Detectives are continuing to examine a "hazardous substance" found at the house.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: "Extensive medical and forensic testing is continuing today to ascertain what the substance is and whether it caused or contributed to Alia's death.

"Detectives, forensic experts and local officers continue [investigations] to find out what happened to this little girl."

Toxicological and forensic tests have been carried out on the child after a post-mortem examination failed to ascertain the cause of death. The results are expected soon.
