Falkland's Oil Operation Being 'Monitored'

The UK Foreign Office has said it is 'closely monitoring' hydrocarbons explorations off the Falkland Islands.

Europe and Asia Minster Chris Bryant said the British Government remains focused on supporting the Falkland's authorities in developing legitimate business in its territory.

"We have no doubt about our sovereignty over the Falkland Islands and we're clear that the Falkland Islands Government is entitled to develop a hydrocarbons industry within its waters," he said.

The Falkland Islands territorial waters are controlled by the Islands' authorities.

"We're monitoring the situation closely, but we're not going to react to every development in Argentina," continued Mr Bryant.

"We mustn't lose sight of the fact that Argentina and the UK are important partners. We have a close and productive relationship on a range of issues: in the G20, on climate change, sustainable development and counter-proliferation."

Mr Bryant said the Government would like to add South Atlantic issues to that list and will work to develop the relationship further.

"If that could be made to work, it would be good for all concerned," he said.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said "all the preparations that are necessary" to protect the Falkland Islands have been made, following reports three naval ships were to join the islands' regular patrol vessel.

The Foreign Office has denied a naval taskforce, reportedly including destroyer HMS York and HMS Clyde, had been dispatched.
