Dead Whale Washed-Up In Cornwall
A deceased 16.9 metre whale has now been washed up around the headland at Porthtowan in Cornwall.
Initially a report was received by Falmouth Coastguard two days ago after something in the water was spotted, east of Zennor.
The St Ives RNLI lifeboat investigated and confirmed the carcass, of the yet unknown species.
A broadcast was made into the area by the coastguard alerting shipping to the floating object and its location has been tracked regularly since the first sighting.
The St Ives Coastguard Rescue Team also made a visual observation from the shoreline.
The Receiver of Wreck, Alison Kentuck, has been informed and she is in negotiations with Cornwall Council in order to dispose of the remains.
It is still possible however that the carcass may be washed out to sea on the next tide.
She asked members of the public not to approach the carcass.
"As yet we do not know how the whale died. So beside the obvious off putting smell in the area, there are notifiable diseases which can be caught from handling deceased whales and we are asking the public to be sensible and remain well away from the area until we have made arrangements for its disposal, and we will do this as quickly as possible," said Ms Kentuck.
She added: "The location is one that is susceptible from being cut off by the tide and access from the cliff is quite difficult, so we are advising people not approach for their own safety."

A whale washed up on a beach in Cornwall has died. The 65ft (20m) fin whale was reported stranded on the beach at 16:45. Some 300 people gathered on the beach but the site was cordoned off to avoid distressing the whale any further.

Rescue attempt launched for whale in the Thames
A rescue attempt has been launched after a rare whale was spotted in the Thames on Friday. The whale, which has been identified as a northern bottle-nosed whale, was spotted around 08:30am on Friday morning. It is the first time that this type of animal has been spotted in the Thames since 1913, when records began.

Rescued whale found dead in Skegness
A whale rescued by experts from the Lincolnshire coast has been found dead on a beach near Skegness. The whale, believed to be a northern bottlenose whale, was one of two whales found stranded on Thursday. The other whale died on Thursday afternoon, in spite of attempts to refloat them.

WDCS claims whales being made into 'dog food'
A conservation group has claimed that whale meat produced in Japan’s scientific whaling programme is being turned into dog food. The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society says that Japan’s stockpile of whale meat has doubled in the past decade as a result of more and more animals being killed each year.

A rescue operation is underway to save a six-tonne whale stranded on mudflats in Langstone Harbour. Firefighters with mud rescue equipment and members of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BMDLR) organisation have attended the scene at Hayling Island, Hampshire to save the stricken mammal.
