Derry Victim Named

The man murdered and dumped near Londonderry last night has been named. He was Ciaran Doherty, 31, and came from the Brandywell area in the city. He was due to get married in three months and had a two-year-old daughter. He was found shot dead close to the Derry-Donegal border. The man's semi-naked body was discovered on the Braehead Road around 10.30pm last night and it is believed he had been shot in the head. A forensic examination of the scene, which has been cordoned off, is under way. Foyle Sinn Fein MLA Martina Anderson said the attack bore the hallmarks of a paramilitary-style killing."

Death Driver Blameless

A verdict of accidental death has been recorded by coroner Philip Rogers after a youngster was hit by a car. He said the driver of the vehicle was in no way at fault, but added that it was "troubling" that the schoolboy hit by a van late at night on a dual carriageway had been served pints and shots at a pub in Neath. An inquest heard Ben James Evans, 15, of Port Talbot, was around three-and-half-times the drink drive limit. He died of multiple injuries after being hit by a Nissan Navara while walking on the A465 in September 2008.

Ferry Jobs Sunk?

About 40 jobs are under threat at a Dorset port following the withdrawal of a cross-Channel ferry service. The Barfleur ferry from Poole to Cherbourg in France was taken out of service last month after 17 years. Brittany Ferries said the route had been losing money since 2003 and it had no option but to stop sailings.

HIV Guilty Of Infection

A man whose girlfriend found out he had infected her with HIV when she was pregnant has been jailed for 10 years. Mark Devereaux - who also had unprotected sex with other women - had known he had the virus for nine years. The 28-year-old woman, pregnant with twins, chose to have an abortion after discovering she had HIV. Devereaux, 41, from Dundee, admitted four charges of culpable and reckless conduct dating from January 2003 to December 2008.

Head-on Crash Kills Women

A horrific crash has left two women dead when the car they were in collided - apparently head-on - with an empty petrol tanker in Cornwall last night. The air ambulance, police, ambulance and fire service were called to the collision on Loggans Moor Roundabout the A30 near Hayle at about 10.30pm. Two other vehicles were involved in the crash. A woman in a Land Rover was treated for shock and two people in a camper van for minor injuries but a baby in one of the vehicles was uninjured.

Boat Engines Stolen In Night Raid
Thieves have stolen "High Value" boat supplies in Dundee during a night raid. Tayside Police say Sea and Shore Chandlers on Broughty Ferry Road was broken into sometime between 21:20 and 23:05 on Wednesday. Outboard boat engines were robbed.

Search for Fife teenager resumes
The search for a teenager missing after he fell off a pier in Fife while fishing resumed today at 7.30 am. Forth Coastguard said the 16-year-old was with a friend in Newburgh, Fife, when he slipped and plunged into the Firth of Tay.

Diana memorial concert plans unveiled
Princes William and Harry have unveiled plans to stage a concert to mark the tenth anniversary of the death of their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. The Concert For Diana will be held at the new Wembley Stadium on July 1 - the princess' birthday.

South Lambeth Residents Spend Night Away Following Helicopter Crash
Some 40 people have spent the night away from their homes following a helicopter crash in central London on Wednesday morning. The crash occurred in South Lambeth when a helicopter crashed into a crane killing both the pilot and a pedestrian. The crash spread debris across a wide area and onto rooftops, leaving a number of homes inaccessible.

Unsolved Scottish Murders Mount-Up
Police in Scotland have a total of 77 unsolved murders on their files, it was reported today. BBC Scotland said all eight Scottish forces were asked to supply the number of unsolved murders on their files. Most only dated back to 1975 when the current force structure was established.
