Appeal For 'Kind' Mersey Taxi Driver

Detectives are appealing for a taxi driver who took a seriously injured man to hospital in Liverpool at the weekend to come forward.

Police said they believe the taxi driver may be able to help them piece together how the 29-year-old victim came to suffer serious head injuries.

The victim, who is believed to be Irish and a visitor to the city, had been brought by taxi to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, at around 11.40pm on Friday 19 March.

Staff at the hospital reported the matter to the police due to the serious nature of the victim's injuries and detectives are keen to trace the taxi driver as a potential witness.

It is believed that the taxi was a black Hackney cab.

The victim is described as being white Irish, around 6ft 1 ins tall, of medium or muscular build, with short fair hair and a cleanly shaven face.

He was wearing a grey t-shirt and long-sleeved sweater, with a distinctive blue t-shirt over the top with the words 'Stag 2010' written on the front.

Detective Inspector Paul Mann, who is leading the investigation, said last night: "The victim is in a critical condition in hospital with serious head injuries consistent with a fall. Because of this we have not been able to speak to him yet to find out what happened so it is vital that we speak to anyone who came into contact with him on Friday night.

"The taxi driver who kindly took him to hospital is potentially an important witness and could play a big part in helping us piece together what happened. I would appeal for that taxi driver to contact the police."
