Man Charged Over Milly Murder

A man is to be charged with the murder of schoolgirl Milly Dowler, eight years after her death.

Today the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed it would pursue charges against Levi Bellfield.

A police investigation into the suspect launched last September concluded in February, Nigel Pilkington, Head of the CPS's South East Complex Casework Unit said.

"After carefully reviewing all the evidence in this case, I have now reached the decision that there is sufficient evidence and that it is in the public interest to charge Levi Bellfield with three offences," said Mr Pilkington.

Summonses have been obtained from Staines Magistrates' Court and will now be served on Mr Bellfield.

He has been accused of the attempted kidnap of Rachel Cowles on 20 March 2002, and the kidnapped and subsequent murder Milly Dowler on 21 March 2002.

Mr Pilkington added: "Milly Dowler's family have been informed of that decision this morning and I will be meeting with them shortly to explain my decision to them personally."
