Welsh Nurses Debut New Uniforms
Nurses and midwives at West Wales General Hospital, in Carmarthen, have become the first to wear the new national uniform.
The new-style uniforms have been designed to make it easier for patients to see who is in charge of hospital wards.
In addition, nurses and midwives will be provided with more uniforms and hospitals are working to make on-site laundry and changing facilities available to staff. This should help prevent and control healthcare associated infections.
Wales is the first country in the UK to introduce a national uniform.
Hospital ward sisters/charge nurses and their deputies will wear navy blue; Clinical Nurse Specialist a royal blue; Staff nurse are in hospital blue; Staff midwives will sport a postman blue; Healthcare support workers are in green; and Nursery nurses have an aqua green uniform.
Wales's Health Minister Edwina Hart said the idea to enhance the role of ward sisters and charge nurses came from frontline nurses in Carmarthen.
"These new-style uniforms are a simple yet effective way to help patients identify who is in charge on a ward as soon as they enter our hospitals.
"Having a consistent design will also make it more cost effective as it allows uniforms to be bulk-purchased."
Chief Nursing Officer for Wales, Rosemary Kennedy, added: "The national uniforms will help to remove any confusion over who is in charge, making it easier for people to direct a query and to have confidence in the reply they receive."
The national uniforms - which are being phased-in across Wales over the next few months – have been purchased using a stringent social and ethical procurement process.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said that he had repeatedly expressed "deep frustration" that the practice had not been stopped and said: "Eliminating mixed-sex accommodation is in patients' best interests.

Lack of nurses puts patients at risk
A lack of qualified nurses means that students are being left in sole charge of patients in the NHS, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has warned. The RCN has pointed to a "serious lack" of registered nurses to support and guide students, which is "endangering patient care and short-changing these urgently needed new recruits to nursing".
