Football Fans Cause Train Disturbance

British Transport Police (BTP) have appealed for information after an incident of disorder onboard a train on Saturday evening.

Police attended Wylam station, Tyne and Wear, at around 9.40pm following reports of disorder involving Newcastle supporters on board the 21.22 Northern Rail train from Newcastle to Carlisle.

Officers joined the train at Wylam station and escorted six men from the train. One man, 23, was arrested at the scene for being drunk and disorderly.

BTP Detective Sergeant Alan Darlington said that a group of men, all from Carlisle, had been drinking before they boarded the train at Newcastle.

"We understand that the group became disorderly and began fighting on board the train, causing distress to passengers and rail staff," said DS Darlington.

"We are continuing to investigate the incident and are very keen to hear from anyone who may have been on the train at the time.

"Football-related disorder will not be tolerated on the railways and we will push for the strongest penalties for those who engage in it," he added.
