Tesco Tops On Profits

The UK top supermarket, Tesco has unveiled a 10.1% rise in annual profits to a record £3.4 billion. The result came despite slowing UK sales growth in the year to February 27 amid tougher competition and easing food inflation.

Ten Percent Binge-Drink

As many as one in 10 people in the UK plan to binge-drink on a night out, a study in the north-west of England has found. Researchers from Liverpool John Moores University questioned more than 200 drinkers in Manchester, Liverpool and Chester on Friday and Saturday nights. Ten per cent of them said they planned to drink more than 40 units of alcohol by the time they went home. Researchers carried out a series of interviews, breath tests and assessments of their subjects' levels of drunkenness, such as slurred speech and ability to walk. When interviewed, half the people said they were drunk and just over half (51%) of those planned to carry on drinking.

Housing Crisis Warning Sounded

The nation's affordable housing crisis will plumb new depths after the election, unless the three major parties commit to protecting the housing budget – the country's housing providers have warned. The National Housing Federation and Home Builders Federation, the trade bodies for housing associations and private developers in England, fear that cuts of 25% to the housing budget - as implied in the Budget - will have dire consequences for affordable housing provision - as well as the industry.

Faller Saved

A climber has been airlifted to hospital after falling from an ice route on the UK's highest mountain. Police said the man fell while climbing in Point Five Gully on the north face of Ben Nevis. Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team and RAF personnel were called to the area on Monday afternoon and found the man and he was taken by helicopter to Belford Hospital in Fort William, where his injuries were "not believed to be life threatening".

Soccer Shrine Closes

The National Football Museum in Preston is to close at the end of the month. Plans to move the museum from its home on Sir Tom Finney Way, Deepdale, to Manchester's Urbis exhibition centre were revealed in October. But the museum had said it hoped to keep a "public face" in Preston if funding could be secured. These hopes were dashed as Lancashire County Council leader Geoff Driver and Chair of Trustees at the museum Paul Dermody failed in gaining funding.
