Children Hurt In Brazier 'Blast'

Seven children have been taken to hospital with burns after pouring fuel onto an open fire.

The youngsters aged between seven and 13 are believed to have poured fuel used for model cars onto an outdoor brazier to get the fire going.

The nitrous methane then exploded burning the children. Some suffered severe burns to their face and chest.

They were taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary following the incident in Dukes Crescent, Edlington, at around 5.45pm yesterday. Four were transferred to Sheffield Children's Hospital.

Edlington station manager Neil Baugh said it was the second such incident he had attended in a matter of weeks.

"It appears that young people had been trying to get the fire going when they poured this model car fuel - nitrous methane - onto it.

"It is so volatile it just explodes, and some of this group have suffered some severe burns.

"It appears to be a bit of a trend and it is extremely worrying.

"I would urge young people not to play with fire of any kind, and definitely not with accelerate such as this fuel or petrol."

None of the group appear to have life threatening injuries but some may be scarred for life due to the severity of the burns , the fire service said.

Fire bosses have warned young people of the dangers of using fuel top light fires.
