Killer Sentenced For Murder

A father-of-three who battered a car dealer to death and then set his body alight has been jailed for at least 17 years.

Andrew McFadden, 43, attacked Gary Campbell,40, after the victim visited his home to sell him a renovated Renault Clio.

Police were called at 6.10am on Wednesday 2 September 2009 to reports of a white Renault Clio alight on land at the rear of Oldchurch Road near to Queen's Hospital.

London Fire Brigade extinguished the blaze and discovered Mr Campbell’s body in the driver's seat of his car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination at Queens Hospital mortuary gave cause of death as multiple injuries.

The court heard how Mr Campbell had attended McFadden’s address the previous day to discuss a car deal. Mr Campbell remained at the property for some time, drinking with the defendant. At some point early on in the evening the two became involved in an altercation and McFadden attacked the victim, causing fatal wounds.

Following the incident and with the assistance of his girlfriend, Simmons, McFadden moved Mr Campbell’s body into his car, drove it further along Oldchurch Road to a secluded location behind Queen's Hospital, and set it alight in an attempt to cover his tracks.

Later on 2 September McFadden was arrested at his home. The following day, Simmons was also arrested. Both were taken into custody at separate east London stations and later charged.

McFadden's girlfriend, 24 year-old Sandra Simmons, of Oldchurch Road, Romford was convicted of perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender. She is due to be sentenced on 28 May.

DI Andy Kelly said: "I am extremely pleased that the jury was not deceived by the web of lies told by both defendants in a contemptuous attempt to save themselves. I only hope that Gary’s family can draw some comfort from the convictions."
