Pensioner Faces Murder Rap

An elderly man is facing charges over the murder of his wife in Kent, police have said. Alan Thomas, 79, of Deanwood Drive, Gillingham, is accused of killing his wife Winifred, 77, whose body was found in Gillingham on Sunday. Mr Thomas is due to appear at Medway Magistrates' Court later.

Glasgow Killing Probed

A murder inquiry has been launched following the death of a 41-year-old man in Glasgow on Sunday. Alexander Duffin was found seriously injured on a footpath in Prospecthill Circus, in the Toryglen area of the city, at about 4.30pm and was taken to the Victoria Infirmary in the city where he later died. Officers are keen to trace a man seen in the area at the time of the incident. He was described as white, in his late 20s and about 5ft 11in.

Lambit Adds Humour

The Northern Ireland-born ex MP who lost his seat in the Commons, the colourful Lembit Opik, has been on TV again. The Liberal Democrat was not debating his party's prospects of joining a government coalition, but was a guest on BBC One's Have I Got News for You, the day after being ousted by Montgomeryshire voters. Mr Opik gained a reputation for appearing on such comedy shows during his 13 years as one of the Lib Dems' best known faces in Parliament. He also had a number of celebrity partners, including the ITV weather presenter Sian Lloyd, and Gabriela Irimia, one half of the pop twins, the Cheeky Girls.
