House Of Fraser Stab Shock

There were serious injuries yesterday after a fight broke out between two employees in one of Manchester city centre's busiest department stores. The injured 40-year-old was attacked in the menswear department of the House of Fraser store on Deansgate on Wednesday afternoon, police said. He suffered knife wounds to his back, neck and chest and is in hospital. A 20-year-old was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. He remains in police custody.

Private Housing Surge Continues

The value of construction projects starts in the three months to April 2010 was up 10.5% on the same period a year ago according to the Glenigan Index for April. The Index, which tracks the value of projects under £100 million, showed a gradual recovery in private sector confidence coupled with a flurry of public sector work. Increases were seen in private and social housing, retail, education and health projects starts. "The construction industry will be looking to a continued rise in private sector work over the coming months with public sector expenditure cuts looming and disruption following the result of the general election," according to Allan Wilen, Economics Director of Glenigan.

Sainsbury's Celebrates

Around 127,000 Sainsbury's staff will soon share a record bonus pot of £80m. The good news comes on foot of Sainsbury's sales and profits rising over the year to 31 March. Underlying pre-tax profit from core operations rose 17.5% to £671m ($1bn). Same-store sales, which strip out the effect of new store openings, rose by 4.3%. The figure also excludes fuel sales. The UK's third-biggest supermarket chain opened 51 new convenience stores over the year. Chairman David Tyler said sales growth was beating rivals'.

Arrears And Repossessions Fall

The number of mortgages in arrears and the number of repossessions both fell in the first quarter of 2010, according to the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML). However, this welcome decline gives no cause for complacency as a large number of households, who are just coping, still remain vulnerable to shocks that may arise from the economic uncertainty ahead. Repossessions as a proportion of all mortgages remained steady at 0.09% in the first quarter, the same proportion as in the previous quarter and down from 0.12% in the first quarter of 2009. The number of repossessions was 9,800, down from 10,600 in the previous quarter and 13,200 in the first quarter of 2009. The proportion of mortgages in arrears also fell.

Owen Paterson Jets To NI

The new Secretary of State for Northern Ireland will travel to NI today. As outlined yesterday morning on www.4ni.co.uk, the new man is former Shadow Secretary, Owen Paterson. He will attend the first London Cabinet meeting this morning, after which he is expected to travel to Belfast. It also emerged today that the Stormont First Minister and the Deputy First Minister have spoken separately to the new Prime Minister David Cameron.

UK Emerges From Recession
The British economy has officially moved out of recession. Growth during the last three months of 2009 was recorded at 0.1%, a much smaller than predicted trajectory. The economy had shrunk for six continuous quarters, the deepest dip in over 50 years.

BP reports profit increase
BP profits have announced a rise in profit in their first quarter report for the company's new trading year. The oil company confirmed that its first quarter replacement cost profit was £5,491 million, an increase of 29% from the same period in 2004.

Regional imports suffer £1bn slump
Government figures released today have revealed that the value of regional imports has slumped by around £1 billion over the past quarter. According the Customs and Excise report, estimates for the fourth quarter 2002 saw regional imports dip £1 billion, or 2%, on the third quarter's figures to £51.4 billion.

Parking Enforcement 'Out of Control'
Growing parking enforcement in private car parks and the huge amounts of money being taken from drivers has reached 'epidemic' level, according to the AA. More than one in 10 drivers say they have been issued a private parking ticket over the last year and tens of thousands of people have had their car clamped or removed from private car parks.
