Commando From Co Antrim Dies
A marine killed in a bomb blast in southern Afghanistan has been named by the Ministry of Defence.
He was Cpl Stephen Walker from Lisburn in Co Antrim. He was 42-years-old and from A Company 40 Commando Royal Marines.
He died on Friday morning after an explosion near Patrol Base Almas, in Sangin, Helmand.
His death brought the total number of British service personnel killed in Afghanistan to 286.
Cpl Walker, who had two children, lived in Exmouth, Devon.
His wife, Mrs Walker said: "Steve was passionate, loyal and determined. He enjoyed the role he had in the Marines but he was a family man at heart.
"He was a fantastic Dad to Greer and he was the perfect soulmate to me.
"Although this is a very sad time, Steve would want us to be positive. Remember the good times, the happy times.
Lieutenant Colonel Paul James, commanding officer of 40 Commando Group, Combined Force Sangin, said Cpl Walker "was one of the most professionally astute men I have ever met".
"Brave, loyal, utterly dedicated and absolutely selfless, he died leading his section on patrol in southern Sangin.
"Having served 20 years in the Royal Marines, he was my most experienced and probably my best corporal. I valued his counsel greatly and, despite being his commanding officer, he taught me tactics."

A soldier killed in Afghanistan – and later awarded a posthumous awarded Victoria Cross – may have died from a bullet fired from his own side. Corporal Bryan Budd, of the 3rd Battalion the Parachute Regiment died in August 2006 after being shot in the abdomen during a fierce firefight in Sangin, Helmand Province.

A teenager has been jailed for 12 years for the murder of a barman. Ryan Esquierdo, 19, choked 28-year-old Stuart Walker to death at an industrial estate in Cumnock on 22 October last year before setting his body alight. He admitted he killed Mr Walker, who was gay, after he tried to comfort him over his own confused sexuality.

Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan named
The Ministry of Defence has named the Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan on Sunday as Lance Corporal Michael Jones. LCpl Jones was killed in a gun battle with Taliban insurgents in the Nimruz province in the southwest of the country.
