BBC's Commissioning Scheme 'Working'

A scheme to ensure true competitiveness in BBC commissioning has been given guarded approval.

The trade association that represents the commercial interests of independent producers, Pact, said the figures released at the end of May regarding the BBC's Window of Creative Competition WOCC) prove that the scheme is working, but "there is room for improvement".

The latest figures from the BBC show that independent production companies won 70% of the WOCC and BBC in-house won 30%, with independents performing well in key public service genres such as drama, entertainment and comedy.

However, independents should be given the opportunity to increase their share of knowledge commissioning.

Chief Executive of Pact, John McVay said: "The WOCC continues to demonstrate the value of competition but we'd like to see Indies being able to compete for more commissions in knowledge, as this counts for many more hours of programming and is a key area for companies out of London."

Pact is the UK trade association that represents the commercial interests of independent feature film, television, children's and animation and interactive media companies.

It is the largest representative group of screen-based content producers in the UK and the largest trade association in the film, television and interactive media sectors.
