Doctors 'Point Out' Laser Eye Dangers
This week's British Medical Journal (BMJ) is warning about the use of high-powered handheld laser pointers.
Dr Kimia Ziahosseini and colleagues from the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Manchester Royal Eye Hospital have described the case of a teenager who presented with central scotomas (dark spots) after he bought a green diode laser pointer over the Internet and shone the laser beam into his eyes while playing with it.
His visual acuity was poor and tests revealed burns to the surface of the eye and disturbances to the retina, the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.
Two months later, his visual acuity improved but some retinal damage remained.
The authors have warned that - although lasers may cause only a transient afterimage - they can lead to permanent retinal damage and visual loss in later years.
The UK Health Protection Agency has received no previous reports of such injury from laser pointers, they write, but it advises that laser products sold to the general public for use as laser pointers should be restricted to devices with laser power less than one Milliwatt (mW), in accordance with the British Standard, and be accompanied by sufficient information on their safe operation.

Boots set to withdraw unprofitable services

The announcement will impact on around 850 jobs, but the company has said that it aimed to re-deploy "as many people as possible".

'Laser Lout' Jailed For Reckless Behaviour
A 21-year old from Stockport has been sentenced to four months in jail for pointing a laser pen at a police helicopter. The laser "temporarily blinded" the pilot who was flying a Greater Manchester Police force helicopter.

A major fire at a former Birds Eye factory in Grimsby has been successfully tackled by firefighters. Around 80 firefighters tackled the blaze at the disused factory, which broke out shortly after 7pm on Wednesday.

Two million people 'risking their sight'
More than two million people in the UK are at risk of needlessly losing their sight through treatable eye conditions, according to a new report. The Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) said that 1.9 million people with diabetes and 250,000 people with early-stage glaucoma are unknowingly risking blindness.

Subliminal advertising 'affects brain'
Invisible subliminal images do attract the brain's attention on a subconscious level, researchers at University College London have claimed. Using brain scans, researchers looked at whether an image you aren't aware of - but one that reaches the retina - has an impact on brain activity in the primary visual cortex, part of the occipital lobe.
