Deadly Roadside Bomb Defused

Firemen risked their lives at the weekend dealing with a grass fire - unaware that a primed 160lb bomb had been concealed in a beer keg and had been planted in a nearby field. Police believe it was planted near Keady in Co Armagh on Saturday night and a fire started in the area later as an attempt to lure officers into an ambush. It remained there for days afterwards until the deadly device was spotted, on the Castleblaney Road, by a farmer tending livestock on Tuesday. PSNI Chief Inspector Ken Mawhinney said it was a calculated and determined effort by dissident republicans to kill police officers.

Ryanair Passengers 'Detained'

Scottish police officers had to calm down air passengers stuck on the runway of Prestwick Airport by buying them water and chocolate. The 168 people on board the Ryanair flight bound for Girona, Spain, became agitated after a six-hour wait. Some of the passengers said they were told they could not have food or water and others wanted to get off. Ryanair called Strathclyde Police officers who calmed the situation. They made no arrests. A spokesman for Ryanair said the aircraft had been due to fly to Girona, but was delayed because of the French air traffic controllers' strike.

Britain's Got Talent judge Piers Morgan has married his girlfriend Celia Walden. It is thought the couple tied the knot in the Oxfordshire village Swinbrook, with a reception in a nearby pub. According to reports Morgan did not invite his colleagues Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell to the wedding.
