Radical Police Reforms To Be Announced

Radical police reforms for forces in England and Wales are set to be announced by Home Secretary Theresa May later today.

The proposals are expected to included the announcement of a new National Crime Agency to replace the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca), which had been nicknamed 'Britain's FBI'.

The new agency is expected to focus on cross-border organised crime and drug trafficking.

Soca, which was launched by the Labour government four years ago, was heavily criticised last year by the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee when figures revealed that only £1 was recovered from criminal gangs for every £15 of the agency's budget.

Other proposals are expected to include the introduction of locally elected police and crime commissioners to oversee each police force, who would have the powers to set force budgets and recruit chief constables.
