Radcliffe Child Heart Surgery Should 'Remain Suspended', Says Report
A major report into child heart surgery at Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital has concluded that operations should remain suspended until improvements are made in care.
Surgery was suspended at the hospital following the deaths of four babies, between last December and February this year, who were all operated on by the same surgeon, consultant Caner Salih.
An investigation was then launched by the NHS South Central Strategic Health Authority (SHA).
However, the report cleared My Salih of any wrongdoing. He is said to have complained about the age of the equipment in the hospital, as well as poor working practices in the paediatric unit, and asked for operations to cease.
The report contained several recommendations, including an overhaul of the system for dealing with serious incidents, better monitoring of death rates and better clinical and managerial leadership.
The SHA Chairman Dr Geoffrey Harris said: "We offer our sincere condolences and we apologise that, in the cases, the standards of care were not what was expected."

Hospitals could reduce pressure on ward beds and bring down waiting lists, by making more efficient use of day surgery, a new report has suggested. The Healthcare Commission’s report into day surgery found that 45% of the theatre time allocated is not being used, due to cancelled operations, late starts and excessive delays between operations.

Children's heart surgery has been suspended at a private hospital in Surrey. The decision came after "serious concerns" were raised by the health watchdog, the BBC has said. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) demanded for immediate improvements at BMI Mount Alvernia Hospital, Guildford.
