Tombstoning Alert Issued
Youngsters in East Yorkshire are being warned about the dangers of diving off rocks and cliffs following a number of recent reports. Bridlington police said they had been called at least once a day to reports of groups of up to 30 youths or more jumping off rocks, the pier and walls. They say the most common places for 'tombstoning' are the Harbour Wall, the Floral area and the steps near the Spa. Police Support Officer Andrea Humphrey from Bridlington police station said: "I have stopped people from as young as 10 and even some adults jumping off the pier. They do not see the danger should they slip or jump in the wrong place."
Student Visa Reviewed
A review of student visas is to be held after the number of students coming to the UK rose by a third last year. Home Office figures show the level of non-EU students coming to Britain increased by more than 75,000 to about 300,000 in the 12 months to March. Immigration Minister Damian Green said a "thorough evaluation" of the system would be held to try to minimise abuse. According to current Home Office statistics, some 313,011 non-EU students were granted visas in the 12 months up to March, bringing with them 31,385 dependants. The figure compares with 235,295 students and 24,780 dependants the previous year.
PM Backs Turkey's EU Bid
Prime Minister David Cameron has said he will fight for Turkey to become a member of the European Union as he addressed business leaders in the country's capital Ankara. Speaking last week, the PM said Turkey's economic rise was an opportunity for other EU states, not a threat, and also highlighted the nation's contribution to the NATO effort in Afghanistan. "When I think about what Turkey has done to defend Europe as a NATO ally, and what Turkey is doing today in Afghanistan alongside our European allies, it makes me angry that your progress towards EU Membership can be frustrated in the way that it has been," he said. "Together, I want us to pave the road from Ankara to Brussels."
Hearing Aid Body Shut
The Hearing Aid Council (HAC) has formally been wound -up as a Non-departmental Public Body today. Responsibility for the regulation of hearing aid dispensers was transferred to the Health Professions Council (HPC). The decision to close the Council was announced in 2005 in response to recommendations made by the Hampton Report on Regulatory Inspections and Enforcement. It concluded that the overall number of regulating authorities should be rationalised.
