Arrest Follows M1 Fatality
The northbound carriageway of the M1 in Leicestershire was closed between Lutterworth and Leicester until mid-morning on Wednesday after an early morning crash in which one person died. It involved a lorry and a camper van, leaving five people to be treated by paramedics at the scene of the crash, which happened between junctions 20 and 21, south of Leicester, at about 1am. Leicestershire Police said one person had been arrested in connection with the crash and reported that three of the injured people were taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary, with one taken to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham.
Disabled Risking Repossession
Almost 65,000 people with disabilities, including those with profound physical disabilities and mental health problems, are at risk of losing their homes because of a government decision to cut support for mortgage interest payments for vulnerable people. The National Housing Federation says 64,000 people who rely on Support for Mortgage Interest payments will be at risk of plunging into arrears in October when mortgage support from the Government is reduced from the current rate of 6.08% to bring it into line with the Bank of England average mortgage rate.
Iraq War 'Service' Input
In its bid to look at the UK's role in the war and the handling of its aftermath, the Iraq inquiry has now invited British veterans of the war to share their views on how the conflict was run. Chairman, Sir John Chilcot, hopes those who served in the country between 2003 and 2009 will provide insights into how the campaign was conducted. He has asked military personnel to meet at Tidworth garrison in Wiltshire on 14 September, or make written submissions to the inquiry.
Fall In House Repossessions
The number of properties repossessed by mortgage lenders has continued to fall according to the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML). The number of mortgages behind with payments has also dropped, and at the end of June there were 178,200 loans with arrears equivalent to 2.5% or more of their mortgage balance. This was 5% lower than at the end of March, and 17% lower than last year. The CML now expects 175,000 mortgages to end the year 2.5% or more in arrears, compared with the previous forecast of 205,000. A total of 39,000 repossessions is now forecast for 2010 as a whole, compared with the previous forecast of 53,000.
