Teen Dies In Cumbria Crash

An 18-year-old man has been killed in a collision on the A6 in Cumbria. The incident happened when the Mini Mayfair John Teasdale, from Shap Village, was driving collided with a BMW saloon on the A6 near Hackthorpe on Thursday afternoon. He was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, but was later pronounced dead. The male driver of the other vehicle was treated for minor injuries. Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Major Drugs Seizure In Oxford

Police have seized drugs with an estimated street value of at least £500,000 in Oxford. Heroin, cocaine and cannabis was found during a search of a house in Reliance Way in the east of the city on July 25. Details of the raid have only now been released due to operational reasons. The drugs have now been sent for analysis. The haul is reported to be one of the biggest in Oxford's history.

Manchester Man Jailed For Child Sex Assault

A Manchester man has been jailed for eight years for sexually assaulting two girls. Keith Tierney, 35, of no fixed address, but formerly of Wythenshawe, was found guilty of seven counts of indecent assault, following a trial at Manchester Crown Court. His first victim only told police of the sexual abuse she had been subjected to her, when Tierney was already in jail for attacking her. The girl was 17 when he threatened her with a knife during an argument and grazed her stomach. He was subsequently jailed for 16 months for assaulting her causing actual bodily harm. While in prison, the girl told police that Tierney sexually assaulted her between the ages of 12 and 14. Another victim then came forward. The second girl told police that Tierney assaulted her in 2004, when she was 16.

Strike At EastEnders

Staff on the TV soap, EastEnders have taken industrial action in a dispute over travel time and expenses. The staff affected, all of whom work for Studios and Post Production Ltd, a BBC subsidiary, are contesting their employer's decision to remove long-established entitlements to travel time and expenses relating to a change in base from Television Centre to Elstree. Yesterday's strike, which involved a group of 27 staff, will be followed by a period of further strike action on Friday 20th August, Thursday 26th August and Wednesday 1st September. In addition, a range of continuous action short of strike is set to start on 18th August. Supervisory Official Helen Ryan commented: "This dispute will only be resolved by further talks with management. We hope that today's action will encourage management to resume serious talks."

Arrests Over Sexual Assault At Islamic Girls School
Three men have been arrested following reports of alleged sexual assault and false imprisonment at an Islamic girls school in Lancashire. The arrests came as Lancashire Police were looking into concerns over a group of teenage girls at the Jamea al-Kauthar school on Ashton Road in Lancaster.

Man Arrested Over Sexual Assault In Somerset
Police investigating a sexual assault in Somerset, during which a mother and child were tied up and held at knifepoint, have arrested a 59-year-old man. Police arrested the man on suspicion of aggravated burglary and sexual assault, in connection with the incident in Sydenham, Bridgewater on 21 January.

Former Minister Held After Alleged Assault
A former Welsh Office Minister has been arrested following an alleged assault on a Conservative party canvasser. Rod Richards, 61, a former Clwyd West MP has been accused of attacking the party worker who was canvassing door-to-door on Wednesday evening. He was held over night at Cardiff’s Fairwater Police Station for questioning.
