Pupils Score Record GCSE Results

Teenagers have again scored record GCSE results, with around seven in 10 pupils receiving at least a C grade.

The pass rate rose for the 23rd year in a row, and results for schoolchildren in England, Wales and Northern Ireland showed that girls continued to out-perform the boys.

However, for the second year in a row, boys performed better than girls in Maths, with 58.6% of boys scoring at least a compared with 58.3% of girls.

Overall, 69.1% of all entries were awarded at least a C grade, up two percentage points from last year.

64.7% of English entries gained a C, a rise from 57.2% last year.

However, there was also a drop in pupils who sat French and German exams, although entries for Spanish increased by 0.9%.

Chief Executive from the Joint Council for Qualifications, who published the latest figures, said: "Students and their teachers can be proud of their achievements.

"The increased entries in biology, chemistry and physics, coupled with improved performance in English and mathematics, is very good news indeed."
