Clegg Admits Early Cuts Avoided Danger Zone

Liberal Democrats leader Nick Clegg has said ministers began cutting spending early after the general election due to "perilous" economic circumstances.

In an interview with the BBC, Clegg, whose party initially opposed early cuts, said that Britain had been in the "danger zone".

He also spoke out against the banks "offensive" bonuses saying he would not take another bonus tax "off the table".

The Lib Dem leadership is being urged by members to ensure spending cuts do not hit the poorest disproportionately.

A motion that demands that the "inequality gap does not widen" is to be debated at the party's conference in Liverpool later.

Brendan Barber, TUC leader, a critic of the cuts, is due to address Liberal Democrats supporters at a fringe meeting today.

This comes after Nick Clegg reassured the Liberal Democrats that the coalition will "put the country on a better path".

The Deputy Prime Minister addressed the Lib Dems in his speech highlighting "this is the right government for right now".
