Animal Activists Jailed Over Hate Plot
Five animal rights activists have been jailed for intimidating staff linked to a Cambridgeshire animal testing laboratory.
Winchester Crown Court heard how Sarah Whitehead, Nicole Vosper, Thomas Harris, Jason Mullan, and Nicola Tapping targeted staff from the supply firms of Huntingdon Life Sciences.
All six were members of a group called Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC).
They have been jailed for between 15 months and six years.
Alfie Fitzpatrick, 21, who admitted taking part, received a 12-month suspended prison sentence and was also ordered to complete 100 hours of community work.
The court heard how the group tried to force the closure of Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) by waging a hate campaign against a host of companies.
Homes of staff were targeted with abusive telephone calls while criminal damage and threats of violence were also used.
Some company directors had leaflets distributed near their homes falsely telling neighbours they were convicted paedophiles while others had used tampons sent through the post saying the blood was HIV positive. Hoax bombs were also posted to the homes of staff and to offices.
Whitehead, 53, was jailed for six years and made the subject of a 10-year anti-social behaviour order when released.
Vosper, 22, was jailed for three-and-a-half years and given a five-year anti-social behaviour order.

Woman jailed for animal cruelty
A woman who kept almost 300 animals in her home has been jailed for three months at Preston Magistrates’ Court. Rosalind Gregson, 55, was also banned from keeping any animals for life. The court was told that Ms Gregson kept 271 animals, including 246 dogs, 16 birds, five cats, two kittens, a rabbit and a chinchilla, in her home.

Cornish farmer jailed for attack on animal inspection team
A Cornish farmer who hurled a vet and an animal health inspector into a slurry pit has been jailed for two years. In January this year, farmer Roger Baker (61) of Ventongimps near Truro was found guilty of attacking animal health inspector Jonathan McCullouch and vet Susan Potter as they made a video of animals on the farm.

Life For Shop Manager's Murderer
An east London teenager has been jailed for a minimum of 20 years for the murder of a Hackney shop manager. Kobina Essel, 19, murdered Matalan worker Jamie Simpson on 22 April 2008. Essel was jailed along with three other males, who were convicted of manslaughter. Anthony Maina, 20, of no fixed address was jailed for six years.
