MP Admits False Accounting

The Metropolitan Police welcomed today's guilty pleas that follow a thorough and detailed investigation of Eric Illsley's parliamentary claims whilst a Member of Parliament for Barnsley Central.

Eric Illsley, 55, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, pleaded guilty to three false accounting charges over claims for council tax, maintenance, repairs and utility bills for his second home at Southwark Crown Court.

After previously denying all charges, he admitted fraudulently claiming more than £14,000 in parliamentary expenses.

In May, he was re-elected as Labour MP for Barnsley Central, but was suspended after being charged and now sits as an independent.

Last week, former Labour MP David Chaytor was the first person to be jailed over the Westminster expenses scandal.

Of those facing court, Illsley is the only serving MP.

He will be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on a date to be confirmed.
