Passengers Get Voice On Rail Line
Passengers in the North East will be able to have more of a say on how local rail services are run with the designation of the Bishop Line between Darlington and Bishop Auckland as a community rail service, Rail Minister Theresa Villiers announced today.
Designation enables train companies to work more closely with community rail partnerships to better design services to meet local need.
Rail Minister Theresa Villiers said: “We want to encourage more passengers on to trains and that’s why I am delighted to be able to make this announcement which means that local communities can become even more involved in how these services run and encourage train companies to provide the services local people want.”
Ian Bevan, Managing Director of Northern Rail, which runs services on the Bishop Line, said: “The community rail partnership for the Bishop Line is already doing a great job and designation will enable it to go from strength to strength. It will also assist in identifying innovative ways of developing the line to the benefit of local people and visitors to the area.”
Charlie Walton, Chairman of the Bishop Line Community Rail Partnership, said: “I welcome community service designation as a further step towards a successful and productive partnership between the rail industry, local authorities, rail users and other interested parties which will result in an improved service encouraging more people to use the line more frequently”.

High Speed Rail Network Gets Backing
A government committee has announced that a high-speed rail link between London and Birmingham has a "good case". The announcement comes after the Government carried out a public consultation on the proposal and the recommended route for an initial high-speed line from London to the West Midlands.

Legal Action Taken Over Cumbrian Rail Crash
It has been revealed that Network rail is to be prosecuted over the Cumbrian rail crash back in 2007, which claimed one life. The rail regulation body, The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) has said that they have started legal proceedings against Network Rail for a breach of health and safety law.

Scottish Rail Strike Suspended
Scottish rail services are expected to return to normal after talks between Network Rail and the Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union lead to a suspension of the 24-hour strike scheduled for noon.

Firms accept liability for Potters Bar rail crash
In a joint statement made today Network Rail and Jarvis plc have formally accepted liability for the 2002 Potters Bar rail crash. Network Rail and Jarvis said they hoped that by "formalising the liability issue, those affected by the tragedy will gain some level of comfort and assistance".

Urgent talks avert threatened rail strike
Train drivers union Aslef has called off the threat of a rail strike on Monday after urgent talks were held today. Aslef had been threating to disrupt services in a major row over rail safety, claiming that thousands of drivers would refuse to drive trains through areas covered by a contentious communications system.
