Kent Power Station To Supply 1.5 Million Homes
Energy Minister Charles Hendry today gave the go-ahead for Scottish Power to construct a new 1,000 megawatt gas-fired power station near Hoo St Werburgh in Kent, adjacent to the existing Damhead Creek 800 MW gas-fired power station.
Charles Hendry said: “This power plant will play a vital role in providing secure electricity supplies for the South East, as well as creating jobs in the region.
“It will be one of the most efficient power plants in the world, and be built carbon capture ready, which means that eventually CO2 produced by the plant could be captured and transported for storage under the North Sea.
“There is also potential, in the future, to use the heat created by the plant to supply the local area.”
The Damhead Creek 2 Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Plant could generate enough electricity to supply almost 1.5 million homes.

SSE To Close Ferrybridge Power Station
SSE has confirmed it is to close Ferrybridge Power Station. The energy provider said it had taken the "difficult decision" following a comprehensive review of its coal-fired power stations. The facility will close by 31 March 2016.

Legal Challenge On New Power Station
Campaigners have lodged papers at the Court of Session in Edinburgh which may halt the construction of a new power station in Ayrshire, it has been reported. Action group, Communities Opposed to New Coal at Hunterston (Conch), has appealed for a judicial review of the plans for the coal-fired power station at Hunterston.

Eggborough Power Station May Cease Operations
Eggborough Power Station may have to cease generating power by March 2016, subject to consultations with staff and government bodies. The coal-fired power station requires additional funding of £200m over the next three years to continue generating power, which the company says is "financially unsustainable" for the 53-year-old plant.

A new nuclear power plant to be built in Somerset has been given the go-ahead, marking the beginning of a ‘new generation of nuclear power’. Energy Secretary Ed Davey told MPs in the Commons that he was granting planning consent for French energy giant EDF to construct Hinkley Point C in Somerset.

Study links power lines to childhood leukaemia
Children who live near power lines are more likely to develop leukaemia, a team of scientists has claimed. Researchers from Oxford University found that children who lived within 200 metres of high voltage power lines had a 70% higher chance of developing leukaemia than those children who lived more than 600 metres away from the power cables.
