Minister Reiterates Commitment To Protect UK Border

North African migrants gathering in France will not evade Britain’s tough border controls, Damian Green insisted today. This follows media reports of camps being set up near the Eurostar terminal in Paris by migrants fleeing political unrest in North Africa hoping to come to Britain. Immigration Minister Damian Green said: “There are strict British immigration controls in place in Paris and additional security checks on transport leaving France for the UK, which have significantly cut the numbers arriving in Britain hidden in lorries.” The UK government has maintained its stance throughout the developments in Libya that a common asylum system or new laws will not resolve the unprecedented influx of migrants at Europe's Mediterranean border. Mr Green added: “We are maintaining this strong regime. Britain has offered Italy practical assistance to help maintain border controls and asylum processes. Those seeking international protection are expected to claim asylum in the first safe country they enter.”

Teenager Arrested After Heroin Intercepted

A 15-year-old youth was among four people arrested after UK Border Agency officers intercepted a pillowcase containing 1.8 kilos of heroin sent from Pakistan. The pillowcase, which had been used instead of an envelope, also contained items of clothing. It was intercepted at Coventry International Hub, a parcel distribution depot close to Coventry airport, and was addressed to a residential property in the Croydon area. Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service's Middle Market Drug's partnership arrested the 15-year-old youth and a 53-year-old woman on 21st April. Two men, aged 34 and 42, were arrested on 22 April 2011. They were taken to a south London Police Station where they were questioned. The youth, woman, and 42-year-old man were released on bail to return on a date in June. The 34-year-old man was released and no further action will be taken against him.

Appeal Launched Over Fatal Road Traffic Collision

Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision last Thursday. Officers were called around midnight to reports of a collision with a male pedestrian, and a male cyclist on Petersham Road outside the Poppy Factory Museum in London. The Ambulance Service and HEMS attended and both men were taken to hospital. The pedestrian, aged 81, was taken to Royal London Hospital but later died from his injuries. Next of kin have been informed. The cyclist, aged 41, received minor injuries and was treated at St Georges Hospital before being discharged. Detective Sergeant Tony Tobin who is now leading the investigation, said: "I am appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or the events leading up to the collision, to speak to our team. Petersham Road would have been very busy at this time of day and I am sure there would have been many people in the area who would have seen this incident."
