Report On Sri Lanka Welcomed

The Foreign Office has welcomed the UN Panel of Experts report on the alleged violations of international human rights and humanitarian law during the military conflict in Sri Lanka. The UK has consistently called for an independent and credible investigation to address these allegations and have fully supported the decision of the Secretary-General to establish the Panel of Experts. The report sets out the importance of a genuine and independent investigation, so that allegations of abuses are seen to have been addressed. Sri Lanka has been encouraged to use its response to the UN report and the report’s recommendations to strengthen the process of accountability and support lasting peace and security. The serious nature of the allegations in the report underline that these allegations, and the issue of accountability for them, must be resolved before lasting reconciliation can be achieved in Sri Lanka.

Chief Inspector Of Probation Named

The preferred candidate to be the next Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Probation for England and Wales has been announced. Diana Fulbrook OBE, currently Chief Executive of Wiltshire Probation Trust, has been selected after a rigorous and open selection process, which took into account the Commissioner for Public Appointments' Code of Practice as best practice. The Justice Secretary has invited the Justice Committee to hold a pre-appointment hearing and will consider the Committee's views before deciding whether to proceed with the appointment.

Sunshine And Showers For Royal Wedding

The Royal Wedding of HRH Prince William and Catherine Middleton will be celebrated in London and throughout the country tomorrow. The weather will play its part in the big day and the latest Royal Wedding forecast is for a mixture of sunshine and showers. Andy Page, Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, said: "After a cloudy start to the day, with a 10% chance of a shower, we should see some sunny spells developing over London during the morning. The chance of a shower increases to 30% for the London area around lunchtime as temperatures reach 17 Celsius". Elsewhere across the country there is the risk of heavy showers, some thundery, breaking out in the afternoon.”
