Minister Explains 'No Win, No Fee' Reforms
Justice Minister Jonathan Djanogly has been explaining reforms to tackle the problem of 'no win, no fee' legal schemes and fears of a compensation culture.
Speaking on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme Mr Djanogly said: “The cause is the costs system. At the moment claimants are able not to lose a penny even if they lose their case. And if you can’t lose anything, why should you not sue, even if your chances of winning are negligible? That is the mechanics of the compensation culture.”
Discussing the new law the minister said: “The new law we are proposing will mean that the mark-up for a winning claimant's fees will be paid from claimant's damages, not the defendant. So claimant lawyers will be firstly more cautious to take on cases, and claimants will have an interest in what they are paying their lawyer. That will be the key to reducing costs. By taking costs out of the system, there will be less money for referral fees.”
The Justice Minister concluded: “There is no doubt that the way the system works at the moment gives a perverse incentive to people to ramp up their claims. We have to reverse the mechanics of a system which is having not only financial, but cultural implications, in terms of people rushing to the courts, putting in claims unnecessarily.”

Unemployment At Six-Year Low
Newly released figures from the Office for National Statistics have revealed that unemployment in the UK has fallen to 2.12m, down by 121,000 in the three months to May. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures show that unemployment is now at its lowest in almost six years, standing at 6.5% in the three months to April.

Work Programme Branded 'Worse Than Doing Nothing'
The governments multi-billion-pound welfare-to-work scheme have been criticised as “extremely poor” by MPs. The Public Accounts Committee has said the Work Programme only managed to get 3.6% of the people on the scheme off benefits and into secure employment in its first 14 months.

Slowing Of UK Jobless Growth
Previous acceleration in the growth of the UK's jobless figure is continuing to ease, according to data released today. Unemployment levels between August and October rose by 21,000, bringing the total figure to 2.49 million. Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggested this is smallest increase since the March-to-May period in 2008.

New Universal Credit Welfare Introduced
The UK Government's shake-up of the welfare system begins today with the launch of its new universal credit payment. According to the BBC, the payment will replace a number of benefits and tax credits, including housing benefit and jobseeker's allowance, into one monthly payment.
