Sports Minister Tests The Water

Sports & Olympics Minister, Hugh Robertson, has visited the Weymouth and Portland International Regatta to see preparations for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sailing events. During the tour of the venue, which was the the first London 2012 Games venue to be finished Mr Robertson saw the facilities being used by the GB squad to prepare for competition and visited the Athletes’ Village. Mr Robertson said: “I was really impressed with the venue and facilities in Weymouth and Portland which will leave a fantastic legacy for the area and help Weymouth market itself as a world class sporting destination.” The International Regatta is part of the London Prepares series hosted by the London 2012 Organising Committee to practice and test the systems and processes for the Games. Around 440 athletes from 66 nations will sail the Olympic race course over the 14-day regatta which will involve more than 170 races and practice sessions. A number of countries including the USA, Spain and China have already established a training base in Weymouth so that the can practice in Games time conditions.

Scots Urged To Learn Law Of The Land

Scots are being urged to learn the laws of a country before they travel in a bid to avoid costly prosecutions. Research by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office showed that 71 per cent of Scots don't always find out about the laws of the country they are visiting before heading abroad, putting themselves at risk of unwittingly breaking the law. Almost 30 per cent were not aware that they would be prosecuted under local law if committing an offence abroad, with four per cent of people thinking they will be prosecuted under UK law, 22 per cent thinking it depends on the country they are in and three per cent admitted to not knowing at all.

Radio Ulster/Foyle Remains NI's Most Listened To

BBC Radio Ulster/Foyle remains the number one listened to radio station in Northern Ireland with an average weekly audience of 591,000 listeners tuning in each week, according to the latest RAJAR (Radio Joint Audio Research) figures for Quarter Two, 2011. These latest RAJAR figures show an increase of 59,000 listeners to the station year on year (with 532,000 listeners in Quarter Two, 2010) and an increase of 26,000 listeners quarter on quarter (with 565,000 listeners in Quarter One, 2011). Radio Foyle, meanwhile, has an average weekly audience of 32,000 listeners. This figure is consistent year on year (with 32,000 listeners in Quarter Two, 2010) and shows an increase of 1,000 listeners quarter on quarter (with 31,000 listeners in Quarter 1, 2011).

UK Emerges From Recession
The British economy has officially moved out of recession. Growth during the last three months of 2009 was recorded at 0.1%, a much smaller than predicted trajectory. The economy had shrunk for six continuous quarters, the deepest dip in over 50 years.

BP reports profit increase
BP profits have announced a rise in profit in their first quarter report for the company's new trading year. The oil company confirmed that its first quarter replacement cost profit was £5,491 million, an increase of 29% from the same period in 2004.

Regional imports suffer £1bn slump
Government figures released today have revealed that the value of regional imports has slumped by around £1 billion over the past quarter. According the Customs and Excise report, estimates for the fourth quarter 2002 saw regional imports dip £1 billion, or 2%, on the third quarter's figures to £51.4 billion.

Gov Has 'Listened To Peers' On Health Bill
The Government has said it has listened to peers over it's highly controversial Health bill, as it prepares to enter the House of Lords for a second time next week. The bill has attracted wide criticism over its proposed reforms to the NHS that would see increased competition and major adjustments to the management structures.

75,000 Repossessions This Year 'Now Looks Pessimistic'
There were 12,800 repossessions by first-charge mortgage lenders in the first quarter of this year, according to the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML). This compares with 10,400 in the fourth quarter of last year, and 8,500 in the first quarter of 2008.
